Okay, on the previous pages we discussed how and why I got started on the Net.
Then we touched on a few things to avoid.
Now I’d like to tell you about a book I stumbled upon quite by chance. But to understand the relevance of the book, let me first tell you what it was I was looking for.
What Is It That We Seek?
What is it that we all hope to find every time we enter our individual choice of keywords into our browser? In this case, 'how to start a web site' of your own.
ANSWERS!
How often do we find them?
Not Very Often!
How many times have you thought you’d found what you were looking for, only to find yet another rip-off or dead end and no real useful info on how to start a website?
Like I said earlier, I really needed to find a way out of my financial problems, and it didn’t look like I was ever going to find it on the Net! If indeed there were a way to make an honest living on the Net, those who were doing it successfully were keeping it a very closely guarded secret.
I was almost at the point of giving up all together, when I actually discovered the truth about the Net.
You see; there is no big secret. It’s all hype. Hype created by those seeking to market their secret formulas, secret formulas that don’t even exist!
The truth is; there are around 50 million websites out there. 5% are destined for greatness, while the other 95% will probably fade and die.
Why?
Well let me put it this way:
You’ve got a 3-litre, twin-turbo, $50,000 sports car. No prior knowledge of mechanics and very few tools. It breaks down.
What do you do?
A. Whip out your adjustable and start stripping it down.
B. Take it to the experts at the main dealers.
Obvious isn’t it!
Well, a website is no different!
If you embark on a website venture with no prior knowledge, backing or support, you will join the ranks of the 95%.
It is simply inevitable!
Here is a brief description of the average home business venture via a website: Or, how to start a website gone wrong:
First comes the brainstorm, a marvelous idea promising great riches.
You’re raring to go.
But go where?
Well most people, having no idea how to start a website, usually start the whole process by hiring a website designer.
He’s the guy that puts your site together. You’ll pay anything from $2,000 upwards for this service. The more pages and features you want, the more it costs.
Next step, a host, ‘the company renting you the bandwidth for your site’. Price varies; you get what you pay for.
Now you need to register your domain, ‘the name of your site’. Around $10 annually.
Great! You’re up and running, all you need to do now is sit back and watch the $$$ roll in!
Wrong!!
WOT NO TRAFFIC!
It’s really amazing that so many of us think that all we have to do is put a website on-line and the sheep will come running.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Think about it! Every time you do a search, how many results are listed at the top of the page? Your average search for example, could yield several million results.
How do you think you’re going to get into the top 20 with that much competition?
Time to hire an S.E.O. ‘Search Engine Optimizer’.
He’s the guy who tweaks and fiddles with your content in the hope of securing higher page rankings. Another few thousand $$$.
Now bearing in mind, S.E.O’s are now becoming obsolete; you might as well follow your hard earned right down the toilet!
You cannot beat the search engines.
Yahoo and Google, the top 2 search engines, have the top brains in the universe constantly changing and updating the algorithms that run the engines and the rankings they give.
RESULT
After several months work and several thousand $$$ invested, what have you got?
You’ve got a website!
Which is exactly what you wanted, and exactly what you paid for.
But what should you have got?
You should have got a business, a good business. A business you created, paid big bucks for, and a business you could understand and service.
But because you put your destiny in the hands of others, you ended up in the 95% club.
Think about it!
If these website designers and S.E.O’s were really that good, why wouldn’t they each be living it up in a tropical paradise with a stream of websites raking in the cash to finance it?

The how to start a website scenario I just outlined contained only the basic requirements to get an average site on-line.
There are many other things to take into account when considering how to start a website, and many other tools you need to make it all work. But I hope I got my point across.
The point being of course!
Even though in the above description thousands of $$$ were spent, it does in no way guarantee success.
Anyway, enough doom and gloom!

Now I mentioned earlier, that I was totally disillusioned with the Net. I had e-books, secret formulas, Gurus and all their empty promises, coming out of my ears. And absolutely no idea how to start a website of my own.
I was a beaten man. A man ready to throw in the towel.
That’s when I received my little Godsend. Arriving with precision timing, in the form of a free downloadable e-book entitled:
Netwriting Masters Course, by Dr Ken Evoy
I actually found it quite by chance while looking for something entirely different on my browser. And, it was extremely lucky for me that it was free.
Because in my frame of mind at the time, after shelling out for countless other e-books on how to start a website, I certainly wouldn’t have paid for it!
So, I made the click, turned on the kettle, downloaded the book, and set about learning how to start a website of my own!
