How to write a book

This how to write a book page, is page one of three. And is also part of,

‘Creative Writing’

You’re sat alone at the bar, again!

The Red Socks are taking yet another pasting on TV, but your mind’s elsewhere…

You’re wondering why those darn agents and publishers just don’t seem to be taking you seriously.

When, an attractive woman takes the seat next to you.

Time passes…

You put your thoughts on hold, and sneak a glance.

Uhmmm… Not bad… Not bad at all…

You find yourself staring.

She catches the look.

You apologize, introducing yourself.

She smiles, and tells you her name’s Stella, and that she’s in advertising.

You tell her you’re a writer.

She’s impressed…

She asks what you write.

“Bad checks and welfare applications!” You reply, in a pitiful attempt at humor.

She leaves!

STRIKE!

One of the first things people always ask is:

“So, what do you do for a living?”

Wouldn’t it have been nice to reply, Best Sellers!

*

I’ve been writing now for quite some time, but I never actually told anyone, because I’d never actually had anything published. But, now that I’ve got this site going, and I’m marketing my own kid’s books, I always reply, ‘I write children’s books’. You’d be amazed at their responses.

Practically everyone I’ve told in the last twelve months has similar aspirations. We get talking about writing a book, novel writing and what I write, the conversation begins to flow, and before long they’re telling me their ideas, and what they’d like to write. Then I’ll say. “Well why don’t you do it? Why don’t you write the book?” Here are some of the responses I get:

“Me, I wouldn’t know how to write a book.”

“I’m not good enough.”

“I haven’t got the time for writing a book.”

“You’ve got to be educated.”

“You’ve got to be famous.”

Cop-outs! Reading in one form or another is an essential part of our daily lives. Whether it’s reading a novel, a newspaper or even the instructions on a micro-meal, almost all of us have the ability to read.

Why do I mention this?

Simply because when most people think about writing, it’s in the form of novel writing. But, what you need to remember when you’re reading those instructions on that micro-meal is, that someone actually wrote them and probably got very well paid for doing it.

My point.

There are literally thousands of ways to write and be paid for it, its not just all about writing a book or novel writing.

Having said that, it’s not much of a pick up line is it?

“Hi, I’m Jonnie, I write micro-meal instructions!”

STRIKE 2!

The real reason most aspiring writers never get round to putting pen to paper or anything else with an element of risk for that matter, is of course, the ultimate fear of failure and rejection.

Most people go on to spend forty years of their lives working for a tyrant in a job they hate, and being paid a mere pittance for the privilege, when they could be fulfilling a dream.

Here’s something for you to ponder whilst thinking how to write a book :

Everyone has a dream, regardless of status, who they are or where they’re from. It could even be something as basic as winning the lottery, but it’s their dream and it’s what gets them through life. To show that person their future, would be to take away their dream. But what’s really sad is that, even though they have a dream, most don’t even get round to trying to fulfill it.

Result: Old age, loneliness, regrets and bitterness.

STRIKE 3… YOU’RE OUT!

What does it actually cost you to try?

Nothing!

You really have, 'No Excuses', and you owe it to yourself to learn how to write a book and to give it a try. Hey, I’ve been at it for years and I’m only just starting to get somewhere. But, I’ve kept everything I’ve ever written, and believe me when I say, I will leave no stone unturned to see it in print one day!

Most of us now have a PC or access to one. But if not, what is the price of a pencil and paper compared to the price of watching your dream fade into obscurity?

*

Now then, your typical how to write a book course would probably include spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc, etc. I’m not even going to insult your intelligence by waffling on about that, if you don’t know it already, you certainly aren’t ready for, how to write a book.

Still want to write a book?

BRAVO!
